Retractable dog leads, one gives a weight and the length decides the size in your hand
The short answer
Prices in GBPUSDEUReach row carries the day it was readTwenty one dog leads from one search, none of them handled here. Nineteen of them wind back into a plastic housing when the dog comes towards you.
Every one tells you how long it is. One tells you how heavy a dog it holds.
The phrase that is on nearly every listing and means nothing
Nineteen of the twenty one describe themselves as being for small, medium and large dogs, or some rearrangement of those words.
A retractable lead is a drum, a coiled spring and a brake. Whether it holds is a question about force, and force is about the dog. A phrase that covers a chihuahua and a rottweiler in the same breath is not an answer to it.
Exactly one listing prints a rating: 50kg. It is the 8m one, and it is the only title on this shelf that has told you the thing you need.
What the photographs know
The pattern this site keeps finding held again here. Open the images and three more listings turn out to have the number after all.
| What it gives | Where it is |
|---|---|
| 20kg | On the tape lead, in its own dimension photograph |
| Rope 1.0cm on the 3m, 1.2cm on the 5m | In a specification image |
| S 0.8cm, M 1.0cm, L 1.2cm by dog size | In a full size table on the fixed rope lead |
Rope diameter is the same fact as a weight rating, expressed as an object rather than a number. Thicker rope, heavier dog. The fixed rope lead is the only thing on this page that sizes itself to the animal on purpose, and it does it in a table its title never mentions.
The length is choosing the thing in your hand
This is the part worth knowing before picking a number, and no title says it.
| Lead length | Housing, across the listings that publish it |
|---|---|
| 3m | About 13cm by 9cm by 7cm |
| 5m | About 16cm by 10cm by 8cm |
| 8m | About 20.6cm by 11.6cm |
More lead means more drum, and more drum means a bigger lump of plastic in your hand for the whole walk. Eight metres is a lot of freedom for a dog in a field and it is also the biggest handle here by a wide margin.
And the small one is small. Four listings say so in their photographs and not one says it in a title: one states that the 3m size may be small for a male hand, another that the 3m handle is preferred for a female hand. If your hands are large, that is a reason to go up that has nothing to do with the dog.
Nobody describes the brake except in pictures
The brake is what you are buying. It is the button under your thumb, it is what stops the dog at the kerb, and it is what wears out.
Not one of the twenty one titles describes it. Two listings do, in their images: one labels a point brake button, jam prevention, a stainless steel movement coil spring and an ABS housing; another names a short stroke braking system and a rust proof chrome plated buckle.
Everybody else tells you the colour.
Three of these are not really the same thing
They share a search term and they are separate purchases.
- A ring rather than a reel. One has a halo shaped handle with a silicone grip, and a small water bottle clipped underneath it.
- A reel with a light in it. A power button on the side, an illuminated ring, and a waste bag holder. Two others simply have an LED.
- A short bungee. A braided lead with a 304 stainless steel spring above the clip, sold for training and for dogs that lunge. It is the shortest thing on this page and the most different.
The extras are where the money goes, and a torch on a lead is a genuinely good idea in a British winter if it is the thing you would otherwise be holding in your other hand.
If the dog pulls
The honest reading of this shelf is that the two fixed leads on it are the better answer for a strong dog, and they cost about the same.
A retractable holds the dog at the end of a thin cord under spring tension. That is exactly right for a dog that mooches about sniffing things and comes back when called. For a dog that pulls, a 1.6m rope with a padded handle, or a short braided lead with a spring in it, keeps the animal beside you and has nothing in it to jam.
Both are on this page. Neither of them was what the search was for, which is usually a sign that the shelf is telling you something.

|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall, and the only one that states a weight Automatic Retractable Big Dog Leash 5/8M-50KG Strong | £19.50$25.24€22.94checked 18 Oct 2026 | The single listing of twenty one that publishes what it is rated for, 50kg, in its own title, and on a shelf where everything else says "small medium large" that is the whole reason to pick it. 8m of cord, which is a great deal of range, and its photographs are honest about the consequence: the housing is about 20.6cm by 11.6cm, appreciably bigger than the 3m reels elsewhere here. For a large dog in open space, this is the one that has told you enough to make the decision | Check opens in a new tab |
| The tape one, and its limit is in the pictures Retractable Dog Leash 4M Tape Rope Automatic | £17.17$22.23€20.20checked 18 Oct 2026 | The only lead here that runs a flat tape rather than a thin round cord, which comes out of the housing without corkscrewing and is far easier to grab hold of in a hurry. Its own images carry a 20kg figure, so it is the second of twenty one to commit to a number at all. 4m, a transparent housing showing the drum, and it claims to extend in all directions without jamming. A medium dog lead, and the tape is the reason to choose it | Check opens in a new tab |
| The one that describes its own brake 1 Pc 5m Nylon Pet Automatic Retractable Leash Walk | £18.73$24.98€22.04checked 18 Oct 2026 | Most of this shelf sells a colour. This listing publishes a labelled diagram of what is inside: a point brake button, a stainless steel movement coil spring, an ABS housing, an anti corrosion hook and reflective nylon webbing, with the body measured at 187mm by 120mm by 30mm. The brake is the part being bought and the part that fails, and this is one of only two sellers here who appears to know that. 5m | Check opens in a new tab |
What you can settle before you buy
- The length is in almost every title and it decides more than how far the dog goes. Across these listings the housing grows with the lead: a 3m reel is about 13cm across, a 5m about 16cm, and the 8m one about 20.6cm. You are choosing the size of the object in your hand as much as the range.
- One title states a weight and it is the number that matters. A retractable lead is a spring, a drum and a brake, and what decides whether it holds is the dog against that rating. Exactly one of twenty one says it: 50kg, on the 8m.
- A second weight limit is in the pictures, 20kg, on the tape lead. Two more give rope diameters by size instead, 0.8cm, 1.0cm and 1.2cm, which is the same information wearing different clothes. Thicker rope, bigger dog.
- Tape or cord is a real difference and only one listing here is tape. A flat tape runs out of the housing without twisting and is easier to take hold of. A thin round cord is the usual thing on this shelf.
- If the dog pulls hard, the honest answer on this page is not a retractable at all. Two of the twenty one are fixed: a 1.6m reflective rope with a padded handle and two hand holds, and a short braided lead with a stainless steel shock spring in it. Both sit in the same search results at the same sort of price.
What to read twice
- Nineteen of twenty one say some version of "for small, medium and large dogs". That phrase covers a chihuahua and a rottweiler at once, so it tells you nothing at all. It is on the listings that give a weight and the listings that do not, which is what makes it noise rather than information.
- Not one title describes the brake, and the brake is the product. Two listings describe it in their photographs, naming a point brake button, a stainless steel coil spring and jam prevention. The rest sell you a housing colour.
- The 3m handle is small, and four listings admit it in their pictures rather than their titles. One says outright that the 3m size may be small for a male hand and another that the 3m handle is preferred for a female hand. If you have large hands, that is a reason to go up a size that has nothing to do with the dog.
- One of these is a ring, not a reel, and one has a torch in it. A halo shaped handle with a silicone grip and a water bottle clipped to it, and elsewhere a reel with a built in light and a waste bag holder. They are different objects sharing a search term, and the extras are where the price goes.
- Several publish a length as a range in one listing. Seven offer two or three lengths under one title, so the number in the heading is a dropdown rather than a property, and the reel you receive changes size with it.
- A retractable lead is a thin cord under tension at your end and a dog at the other. None of these listings discusses that, and it is the reason the fixed rope options are on this page at all. Worth a thought before buying 8m of it for a strong dog.
