The plastic brush is the commonest, and several carry a mesh pouf on the back of the head for lather. The wooden ones have natural bristle, horsehair or boar. The silicone ones have soft silicone bristles, and most have firmer nubs on the other side.

How far it reaches

Twelve of the sixteen that give a length are 34 to 41cm. A wooden brush comes in 56cm, a bamboo loofah is 44.5cm, and a U-shaped handle runs 70cm round a curve that goes over the shoulder or round the waist. Nine long handled listings give no length.

If lifting an arm is the problem, the length and the shape of the handle matter most. Cumberland Council, for one, lists long-handled sponges and brushes among the aids for washing your body, for reaching all areas without strain, and says to contact its Adult Social Care team to discuss your needs. Your own council is the place to ask.

Bristle, silicone or cloth

Natural bristle comes on the wooden handles, and the 56 or 43cm brush says it is for wet or dry brushing. Silicone is soft, and most silicone brushes here have a softer side and a firmer one. A mesh pouf or a loofah is for lather. The scrub cloth rubs instead of brushing, and comes in three grades, labelled by skin.

Nearly every brush here has a hole or a rope loop in the end of the handle, so it can hang up to dry.

What was left out, and why

The brush with four replaceable heads is the dearest here, and the wooden set with hand brushes is among the dearest too, with a length it cannot agree on. A brush that holds shower gel in its handle has the shortest handle here at 34cm. Of each design sold under several listings, compare them before buying, and the silicone pair’s skin claims count against it. The coconut bristle brush disagrees with itself about what its bristles are. The two hand pads do not reach the back, and the poufs and brushes with no length leave out the one number that matters.

What you can settle before you buy

Check the length. Sixteen listings give one, and twelve of them are 34 to 41cm. A wooden brush comes in 43 or 56cm, a bamboo loofah is 44.5cm, and a U-shaped handle runs 70cm round its curve.
Bristle, silicone or cloth. Natural bristle on a wooden handle, soft bristle on a plastic one, soft silicone, a mesh pouf or a loofah, or a scrub cloth. One scrub cloth brush labels its three fabrics by the skin each is for.
A strap or a pad instead of a handle. A silicone strap with a handle at each end is pulled across the back with both hands. Two hand pads strap over the palm or the fingers and do not reach the back at all.
If reaching is the problem. Cumberland Council's adult social care pages list long-handled sponges and brushes among the aids for washing your body, for reaching all areas without strain, and say to contact Adult Social Care to discuss your needs. Your own council is the place to ask.

What is not great

What to read twice

Skin claims with nothing behind them. One silicone brush, sold under two listings, shows photographs of back acne, itchy skin and thick keratin under the words solve various skin problems. A wooden set says it reduces 99% of skin problems, and others promise better circulation. A brush washes your back.
Four designs, nine listings. A plastic brush with a mesh pouf on the back is sold under three listings in the same photographs, and a black silicone brush, a silicone strap and a clear blue brush under two each.
Eleven give no length. Nine of the long handled ones never say how long they are, and neither strap does. A length is the one thing that decides whether it reaches.
Some disagree with themselves. A wooden set measures its handle at 50cm in one photograph and calls it extra long 55cm in another. A brush sold as coconut bristle calls its bristles natural pig mane in one of its own photographs.
