Claw clips, fifteen say large and one sold for thick hair is 3.5cm
The short answer
Prices in GBPUSDEUReach row carries the day it was readSeventeen claw clips from one search and the order export, none of them worn here. The sprung plastic claw that holds a twist of hair at the back of the head.
Fifteen titles say large. The size that matters is in the photographs, and it runs from 3.5cm to 13cm.
Which you are buying
| What the photographs show | Listings |
|---|---|
| The plain matte claw, keel, rectangle or cross shaped | 3 |
| Loops and bows | 4 |
| Flat clips that lie against the head | 2 |
| Waves, a music note and a daisy | 4 |
| Satin roses and tulle bows over a claw | 2 |
| Not claw clips: a spring clip and a bun holder | 2 |
The plain claw does the most, and the shapes are the same mechanism in a different outline. What changes between them is the length, which decides how much hair they close over, and how far they stand off the head.
The length
| Size from the listings’ own photographs | |
|---|---|
| 13cm | thick and long hair, a full twist |
| 10cm to 10.5cm | the everyday clip |
| 8cm to 9.8cm | finer or shoulder length hair, a small twist |
| 3.5cm | a small section, not a twist |
Ten of the seventeen give a size, and eight of those ten only in a photograph. The daisy clip is the case to remember: its title says large, strong hold and for thick hair, and the photograph that measures it says 3.5cm.
Standing off or lying flat
A claw stands out from the back of the head by the depth of its jaws. That is fine walking about and uncomfortable against a car seat or a sofa. The two flat clips here are made for that: a low oval that lies close, shown in one gallery with someone driving and someone leaning back on a couch.
What was left out, and why
The chiffon flower on a spring clip and the bird’s nest bun holder are left out because they are not claw clips. The loop clips and the heart are pretty and give no size. The tulle bow is the satin rose’s job done for a little more. And the ten pack of flat clips is a good buy for a household, and a lot of clips for one person.

What you can settle before you buy
- Choose the length first. The clip has to close over the whole twist with its teeth meeting. Here 13cm is the size sold for thick, long hair, around 10cm is the everyday clip, 8cm suits finer or shoulder length hair, and a 3.5cm flower holds a small section and no more.
- Flat if you lean back. A flat clip lies close to the head instead of standing off it, so you can rest against a car headrest or a sofa. One listing's own photographs show exactly that.
- Find the size in the gallery. Only two titles give one. Eight more listings print it on a photograph, usually the last one, so look there before choosing.
- Weight matters on fine hair. The bow clip weighs 17g and the keel clip 33g by their own photographs. A heavy clip on fine hair slides down by the afternoon.
What to read twice
- Large is on fifteen titles. It covers everything from a 13cm rectangle to an 8cm wave, so it tells you nothing. The number in the photograph does.
- One sold for thick hair is 3.5cm. A daisy shaped clip is titled matte, large, strong hold and for thick hair, and its own photograph measures it at 3.5cm by 3.5cm. That is a clip for a small section at the front.
- Two are not claw clips. A chiffon flower on a metal spring clip and a bird's nest bun holder that expands around a ponytail are both sold with claw clip in their titles.
- Strong hold is a claim, not a figure. No listing says how much hair a clip holds. The spring and the teeth do the work, and only two galleries show them.
