Insulated lunch bags, the cold comes from the ice pack, not the bag
The short answer
Prices in GBPUSDEUReach row carries the day it was readThirty insulated lunch bags from one search and the order export, none of them handled here. The bag that takes a packed lunch to school or the office.
A lunch bag keeps the cold in. The cold itself comes from the ice pack.
Which you are buying
| What the photographs show | Listings |
|---|---|
| A box bag with a zip lid | 12 |
| A tote or a handbag style bag | 8 |
| A flat, round or oval bag shaped to a lunch box | 4 |
| A round bucket bag for a food jar or stacked tins | 3 |
| A bag with two compartments | 2 |
| An 18 or 30 litre cooler bag | 1 |
The box bag is the commonest: a foil lined box with a zip lid and handles, some with a shoulder strap. The totes fold over or zip at the top. The shaped bags are made for one kind of lunch box, which is the point of them.
The ice pack
A lunch bag slows the warming down. It does not make anything cold. Brighton & Hove City Council’s food safety sheet on lunch boxes says the best way to keep food cool is an insulated bag and an ice pack, and to put the ice pack on top of the food, because cold air sinks. With no ice pack, it suggests freezing a small carton of fruit juice or a plastic bottle of squash, not a fizzy drink.
It also says to keep snacks for break apart from lunch, so the bag is not opened too often, and that if a lunch cannot be kept cold, to leave out high-risk foods such as cooked meats, soft cheese, fish and egg.
The hours on the panels
Five listings print a figure. One cream design shows a hot meal at 72 degrees after an hour and 45 after three and a half, and a cold one at 5 degrees after an hour and 10 after three and a half. A quilted two layer bag claims 4 to 6 hours warm and 6 to 8 hours cold, and another bag 4 hours or more warm and 6 or more cold. None says what was in the bag, whether it held an ice pack or how warm the room was, so none of those figures can be compared with another.
Size
Twenty two listings give their size, and that is the number to check against the lunch box. The shaped bags print which box each size is for, and their round ones give the litres, from about 4.8 to 7. The cooler is the only other listing that gives a capacity, 18 or 30 litres, and it is a picnic cooler.
What was left out, and why
A 100 litre cooler and a picnic basket with a metal handle came back from the search and are not lunch bags, so they are not on this site. The quilted two layer bag and the waxed canvas roll top are among the dearest here. Of the designs sold under several listings, compare them before buying. Bags printed with slogans or cartoons, and the ones that give no size, say less than the picks.

What you can settle before you buy
- Measure your lunch box first. Twenty two listings give their size, from a bag 13 by 10 by 17cm for a food jar to a cooler 41 by 26 by 30cm. One design comes in nine sizes shaped for square, round and oval lunch boxes, and says which is which.
- The ice pack does the cooling. Brighton & Hove City Council's food safety sheet on lunch boxes says the best way to keep food cool is an insulated bag and an ice pack, with the ice pack on top of the food, because cold air sinks.
- No ice pack, freeze a drink. The same sheet suggests freezing a small carton of fruit juice or a plastic bottle of squash, not a fizzy drink, if there is no ice pack.
- Shoulder strap or handles. Most box bags have two top handles, and a few add a shoulder strap, as do the round, two compartment and cooler bags. For a walk to school or a bike, the strap is the one that matters.
What to read twice
- Hours of cold, with nothing behind them. Five listings put a number on it, 5 degrees after an hour and 10 after three and a half on one design, 6 to 8 hours cold on another. None says what was in the bag, whether an ice pack was in it or how warm the room was.
- An ice pack in the title is not an ice pack in the box. Three titles say ice pack and a fourth says ice bag, and none of their photographs shows one. Expect to buy it separately.
- One design, four listings, and another, four more. A cream bag printed MEAL BAG is sold in flat, round and oval shapes under four listings, and a taller MEAL BAG box under five more. A wave striped bag is sold twice.
- Not every bag is a lunch bag. A 100 litre cooler and a picnic basket came back from the search and are not on this site, and an 18 or 30 litre cooler bag is for a family picnic more than one lunch.
