Thirty four phone lanyards from one search and the order export, none of them handled here. The cord that keeps a phone on you, round the neck, across the body or on the wrist.

Seventeen of the thirty four sell only the patch. Six of the seventeen with a cord say how long it is.

Which you are buying

What the photographs showListings
A patch only, no cord: clear plastic or fabric8
A patch only, no cord: steel9
A long cord for the neck or across the body8
A wide strap or a chain3
A short loop for the wrist5
A coiled cord with a clip1

Every listing here hangs the phone from a patch, and half of them sell nothing else. If you already have a cord, a patch is all you need. If you do not, read the title for the word patch or tab: several patch listings photograph a cord and say in small print that it is not included.

How the patch works

The patch is a thin tab with a ring on one end. The phone goes into its case with the patch between the two, and the ring comes out through the hole at the charging port, or on one design through the speaker hole beside it. The cord clips onto the ring. Many listings say the patch does not block charging.

None of it works without a case. Three listings tick a full-coverage case and put a cross against a half-coverage one. The thinner patches make a point of it: four steel patch listings say 0.2 or 0.3mm, two cords say their steel plate is 0.4mm, and one clear patch says 0.019 inch.

Neck, body or wrist

A long cord goes round the neck or across the body and leaves both hands free. A wrist loop keeps the phone at the hand. Of the seventeen with a cord, six give a length: the plain cord that adjusts from 86 to 157cm, the patterned strap from 70 to 130cm, a butterfly strap with a coin pouch from 55 to 70cm, a chain at 120cm, and wrist loops of 22cm and 18cm. The other eleven leave it out.

Anti-theft

The titles say anti-lost, anti-drop, anti-fall and anti-theft. A lanyard keeps the phone on a cord, and that is all any listing shows. One crossbody cord says it holds over 66lbs, with no test behind it.

The Metropolitan Police advice that Hackney Council published for its Look up, look out campaign on phone snatching does not mention straps. It says to always be aware of your surroundings, to go hands-free to make a call, to be discreet or put the phone out of sight, and if you have to use it, to stand away from the roadside, close to a building or wall.

What was left out, and why

The butterfly strap with its coin pouch is the dearest listing here, and the plain cord picked above is the next dearest, picked because it is the only plain cord that gives a length. The steel patches and the black neck cord sold twice say the same thing at different prices. A chain woven with leather-look strip and pearls is a fashion piece. Two neck cords, two wrist loops and a twisted rope were photographed beside other makers’ logos and magazines, and a turtle charm loop gives no size. The coiled cord with a clip and a key ring does not say how many come in a pack.

What is good

What you can settle before you buy

  • A cord, or only the patch. Seventeen of the thirty four sell only the patch, a clear plastic, fabric or steel tab with a ring on it, and no cord. Several photograph a cord they do not include, with a note in small print saying so.
  • The patch needs a case. It sits between the back of the phone and the case, and its ring comes out through the hole at the charging port. Three listings tick a full-coverage case and put a cross against a half-coverage one.
  • Neck, body or wrist. A long cord goes round the neck or across the body. A short loop goes round the wrist. Six of the seventeen with a cord give a length, from 86 to 157cm on the longest adjustable cord to 18cm on a wrist loop.
  • Plastic, fabric or steel. The patches come in all three. Six listings put a figure on the thickness of a steel patch, from 0.2 to 0.4mm, and one clear patch says 0.019 inch, about half a millimetre.
What is not great

What to read twice

  • Anti-theft is the seller's word. The titles say anti-lost, anti-drop, anti-fall and anti-theft, and none shows a test. The Metropolitan Police advice that Hackney Council published for its Look up, look out campaign on phone snatching says nothing about straps.
  • A strength figure with nothing behind it. One crossbody cord says it holds over 66lbs. No listing shows a test of how much any cord or patch will take.
  • Five designs, ten listings. A black neck cord, two steel patches and two clear patches are each sold twice in the same photographs, at different prices.
  • Most cords give no length. Eleven of the seventeen with a cord never say how long it is.
