Fairy lights, seven run on button batteries and one says how long

The short answer

Prices in GBPeach row carries the day it was read
Best overall, on a USB plug Led Fairy Lights Copper Wire String Plain copper wire on a USB plug, in 1, 2, 5 or 10 metres by its title. Its own diagram says what to run it from: the USB port of a computer, a phone charger or a power bank. So there is no battery to buy, change or swallow, and the plug is one you already own. Warm white or multicolour, with a waterproof badge on the photograph of it coiled in a wine glass £2.78checked 18 Oct 2026 Check price opens in a new tab
Cheap, on three AA cells 5-30M LED Fairy Lights Battery Operated Warm white copper wire on a clear box that holds three AA cells, shown loaded in its first photograph, with a switch on the end. Its title runs from 5 to 30 metres, so check which length the price is for. Nothing else is printed, no bulb count and no hours. For a shelf, a jar or a mantelpiece with no socket nearby it is among the cheapest strings here £1.79checked 18 Oct 2026 Check price opens in a new tab
With a remote and an 8 hour timer 8 Mode Fairy LED Light 2/5/10/20M Remote A battery box printed with an 8 hour timer and a list of nine settings, from steady on through slow fade to twinkle, and a remote with a dimmer. The timer is the reason to pay more for it: switched on in the evening, it does not run the cells flat overnight. Silver or copper wire, 2 to 20 metres by its title, and the box is marked waterproof in its photograph £4.25checked 18 Oct 2026 Check price opens in a new tab
Green wire, for a Christmas tree 5M/10M/20M LED Copper Wire String Lights The wire is green rather than copper or silver, so on a tree it disappears into the branches and only the bulbs show, which is what its own tree photograph is for. USB and eight modes by its title, wound on a spool in 5, 10 or 20 metres. A tree takes a lot of string, so this is the one to buy long £3.82checked 18 Oct 2026 Check price opens in a new tab
For Halloween, on AA cells 1pc 20/30 LED Halloween Copper Wire Light Ghosts, pumpkins and bats on the wire, 2 metres with 20 bulbs on two AA cells or 3 metres with 30 on three, by its own power panel, batteries not included. Shown in a glass jar and across a table of lanterns. AA cells rather than button cells, and it is October £3.56checked 18 Oct 2026 Check price opens in a new tab
Wine bottle corks, five of them 5pcs LED String Lights Copper Silver Wire Five corks, each with a length of fairy light wire, a switch on the side and three LR44 button cells in a tray that slides out of the cork, batteries not included. Its own photograph measures the cork at 4.9cm long and 1.6 to 2.2cm across, so check the neck of the bottle you have in mind. The tray comes out by hand, so keep these out of reach of small children £3.86checked 18 Oct 2026 Check price opens in a new tab

Twenty three strings of copper wire fairy lights from one search, none of them handled here. The thin wire with a bulb every few centimetres that goes in a jar, round a mirror or up a tree. The solar ones are in the garden lights guide.

What powers it is the whole decision. Seven run on button batteries, and only one says how long the batteries last.

Which you are buying

What powers itListings
A battery box, two or three AA cells where it says8
Button cells, CR2032 or LR44, in a flip box, a pod or a wine cork7
A USB plug7
A mains plug with two round pins1

Most are the same plain wire in copper or silver, now and then green or red, and the shapes are extras. Three are wine bottle corks, three put ghosts and pumpkins, cat paws or pearls and leaves on the wire, one is a pod that sits under water in a vase, and one is a string of colour changing bulbs run from a phone app.

USB, AA or button cells

USB is the easy answer anywhere near a socket. A phone charger, a laptop or a power bank runs it, there is nothing to change, and the plug is one you already own.

AA cells are for a table, a shelf or a mantelpiece with no socket nearby. A box of two or three holds several times the charge of a pair of coin cells, and spare AA are in every corner shop.

Button cells make the smallest holder, small enough to hide in a cork or under a jar, and they run flat first. The one listing that gives a battery life puts its three LR44 cells at more than 72 hours and says a pair of CR2032 goes dim after 24. That is a seller comparing itself with everyone else, and it is still the only hour figure on the page.

Button batteries

Seven listings run on CR2032 or LR44 coin cells: four in a small holder on the end of the wire, three inside a cork. Trading Standards guidance on button batteries asks for a battery compartment that needs a tool such as a screwdriver or a coin to open, or two separate movements made at the same time, because a swallowed button battery can burn through the tissue around it.

Six of the seven show the holder open or the cells out, and not one of the six shows a screw or a tool: a lid that flips up, a tray that slides out of the cork, a pod that twists apart, a stack of cells that pushes into the end of a cork. The seventh, also a cork, is drawn with its cells behind a cover held by a small cross head screw, the only one on the page, and it is a drawing rather than a photograph. None of them is for a room a toddler can reach. In a house with small children, buy USB or AA.

Length and bulbs

Where a listing gives a length and a bulb count together, it is ten bulbs to the metre: 2 metres with 20, 5 with 50, 20 with 200. A longer string is more of the same, not brighter.

The titles list every length on offer, from 1 metre up to 30, and one red wire string titled 20 metres and 200 bulbs shows 5 metres and 50 bulbs on its own battery panel. Check which length the price is for before comparing two.

What was left out, and why

The 50 and 100 metre green string runs from a mains adapter with a two round pin European plug, which needs an adapter in a UK socket. The app controlled string is a different thing, a strand of colour changing bulbs that needs a phone to work it. The firefly string that gives 72 hours, the underwater pods and a ten pack sold as wholesale all run on button cells, and the firefly string and the underwater pods cost more than anything else here. One USB string with a remote is left out for a designer’s name on a gift box in one of its photographs, and its own diagram says it has no timer. The cork listing drawn with a screw over its cells gives no size and no battery type, and one of its photographs is a bar shelf of branded spirits; the third cork listing’s panel is in garbled English. The rest are the same plain string as the picks with less in their photographs.

What is good

What you can settle before you buy

  • Plug it in if there is a socket. Seven listings run from a USB plug, so a phone charger, a laptop or a power bank powers them and there is no battery to change. The best overall pick is one.
  • AA for anywhere else. A box of two or three AA cells holds several times the charge of a pair of coin cells, and spares are easy to find. Eight listings come with a battery box, the cheapest among them, and those that say what it takes say AA.
  • Ten bulbs a metre. Every listing that gives a length and a bulb count together puts them 10cm apart, so a longer string is more of the same, not brighter.
  • A timer saves the batteries. One battery box here is printed with an 8 hour timer, so it switches itself off rather than running flat overnight.
What is not great

What to read twice

  • Seven run on button batteries. CR2032 or LR44 coin cells, in a flip box, a pod or a wine cork. Six show the cells out, and not one of the six shows the screw that safety guidance asks for. Not for a home with small children.
  • Only one says how long. More than 72 hours from three LR44 cells, by its own panel. No other listing gives a battery life at all.
  • The length on the title is the longest option. One red wire string titled 20 metres and 200 bulbs shows 5 metres and 50 bulbs on its own battery panel. Check which length the price is for.
  • One has a European plug. A 50 or 100 metre green string on a mains adapter with two round pins, which needs an adapter in a UK socket.
